This is the scene around my house lately. (Well… I (the mom) am not that skinny or that young but, you get the picture.)
Quick background: I have an 18 year old girl that will graduate in May. Bless my heart! In May also will be the 3 year anniversary of her dad’s death from cancer. So life hasn’t been so easy around here over the past 2 1/2 or more years.
I have the best daughter in the world. She has been great A and B student, all while taking AP classes and in the Honor’s Academy at her school. She don’t drink or do drugs. She loves being with her mom, but heaven forbid she turned 18 not too long ago and up until then the biggest worry I had was getting her to clean her room and picking her dirty clothes up out of the bathroom floor. 18 and still in high school but she is 18 and that, pray tell, to her means she knows it all.
There are parents that say and obviously mean it…”I can’t wait till my kids turn 18 and they are on their own.” I can honestly say that is not me. I am not that mom! And I am proud NOT to be that mom! Who could throw their kids to the wolves and let them make mistakes, huge mistakes without batting an eye? I have always gotten the “but her mom lets her….” and I say “I am not her mom, I am your mom, sorry but that’s the way it is.” and I get the “You make me so mad” and I say “That just means I am doing my job as a parent.”I don’t think I am the only one that says those things, am I?
I love my daughter with all my heart so I am the: Not while you live in my house mom! I am the:: I would take a bullet for you mom! I am the:: I will fight for you tooth and nail mom! And I am the:: Proud to be that way mom!
Sure she’s going to graduate from high school, go to college, have a career, have her own place (I hope) and then she can make her own stupid mistakes and if I know about them then I will try to guide her in a different direction but for the time being she lives under my roof, driving the car that I paid for and is in my name and still in high school. I will stick to my guns and to be the Not while you live in my house mom! The:: I would take a bullet for you mom! The:: I will fight for you tooth and nail mom! And the:: Proud to be that way mom!
Maybe I am wrong, but I don’t think I am.
On a funny note: So since my daughter thinks she is grown up this mom has been on strike this week, no cooking dinner (that’s probably not the best idea for someone that runs a cooking blog, but oh well) and not washing her clothes, she better get busy this weekend or she won’t have a clean thing to wear. But to be honest I am tired of Ramen Noodles and ham and cheese sandwiches! I love to cook and love great food. It’s chilly outside and I am craving homemade chili but I don’t have all that I need in the pantry and it’s too chilly (in the 20s) to get out today and go get it! So it just may be another Ramen Noodle day! But I do have what I need for a Coconut Pie that will be going in the oven soon! :-)
