Fill Some Tummies This Winter

Fill Some Tummies This Winter

The end of the year is one of the busiest for a few reasons; there are flights to book, cards to write and gifts to buy, not to mention the seemingly constant string of holiday parties to attend and potlucks to cook for.  But while you’re enjoying your home-cooked lasagna, followed by a steaming mug of hot cocoa and plate of freshly-baked cookies this winter, it’s important to keep a much bigger picture of food in mind.

According to ConAgra Foods®, over 1 in 5 kids in the United States don’t know where their next meal is coming from and over 16 million (almost 22% of all U.S. children) are considered “food insecure,” meaning they don’t know how long the food they do have will last.  The statistics are scary, but luckily there are many ways to help bring this number down—and what better time to give back than as we head into a new year?  The following are simple ways to fill up some hungry tummies this winter:

Donate

Donating food might not be the most original way to give back this season, but it’s a popular activity because it’s just so valuable.  Non-perishable goods like canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, rice and beans can be lifesavers for hungry families and help ensure regular meals.  Drive down the street and you’ll probably find somewhere looking for food donations, from churches and synagogues to office buildings and corporate chains.

Use Your Words

There are other ways to donate food that don’t involve shopping at all.  Slim Jim® is a prime example: they’re currently running a promotion where they will donate one Slim Jim for every short note written to the troops through their website (you can do this here).  It takes all of two minutes, you don’t have to leave your house and you can still feel good about feeding someone deserving.

Start Cooking

For those of you who feel most comfortable in the kitchen, donating homemade food to families in need is another excellent way to give back to your community.  Some food banks and other donation centers accept holiday cookies and other goodies to give their patrons some treats that are a little more festive and enjoyable than typical food donations.

Volunteer Your Time

If you can’t stand the kitchen, try something a little more social.  Volunteering at a soup kitchen requires zero culinary skills but still allows you to feed dozens of people in need.  For some, actually interacting and talking with those they are helping can be make the experience especially rewarding.

Giving back feels good—both for you and for the hungry child or adult whose tummy you’ll be making very happy.  So take a minute this season to remember that health and happiness are some of the most valuable gifts out there, and that giving them is one of the easiest things you can do this winter.

Warm up with soup from Panera Bread

by Shelley on December 19, 2012 · 2 comments

in Who Knows?

We were out and about doing some Christmas shopping the other day and stopped in one of my favorite restaurants for dinner, Panera Bread.  The weather is getting cooler here in the south and their wholesome soup will just warm you up!

My daughter had her favorite Broccoli Cheddar Soup along with the new Big Kid Grilled Cheese. Yum!

( I had to try a bite of that Big Kid Grilled Cheese and loved it.)

I just had to try the new All Natural Sonoma Chicken Stew and my favorite sandwich Bacon Turkey Bravo! I love, love, love the Thumbelina Carrots you will find in the Sonoma Chicken Stew. super tiny, round whole carrots. They really are tiny carrots with big flavor!

A lot of details go into the soups and stews as with all of the items you will find at Panera.

So when you are out and about in this cold weather stop in Panera Bread and warm up with some soup and a sandwich.

Disclosure: I was provided with a Panera Bread gift card to sample the soup as well as a stipend for my time in writing the post. All opinions are my own.

Homemade Powder Laundry Detergent

by Shelley on December 12, 2012 · 1 comment

in Who Knows?

This morning I ran out of my liquid laundry detergent and had to have some so I made a powdered version. Quick and easy!

1 bar of Fels Naptha or Ivory soap finely grated (*See my Ivory instructions below)

1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax

1 cup Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda (** NOT Baking Soda)

Mix well and store in an airtight container.

You may need to shake the container before each use to mix it up. Let the dust settle before you open the lid. Use 1 tablespoon for a small or medium load or 2 tablespoons for a large load or in a an frontloader. This does not get all soapy and sudsy. Suds are not needed to clean your clothes.

Keep out of reach of children.

If you choose to use Ivory here is a super easy way to get fine flakes. Place 1 bar of Ivory soap in a large microwave safe bowl and microwave for 90 seconds. It will expand tremendously and look similar to meringue. Allow it to cool completely and with your hands flake it apart. If there are still chunks microwave in increments of 15 seconds allowing it to cool and continue to flake apart. Don’t try microwaving other soaps it won’t work!

I joined Costco!

by Shelley on December 5, 2012 · 2 comments

in Saving money

A year or so ago a Costco opened close by and I never really thought that joining would be beneficial for a family of 2 but….I never really knew  about the gas prices. Come to find out the gas is  normally 7-9 cents cheaper than the stations and since for my job as a home health nurse means driving  around all day I thought I would save more than the membership fee  on gas alone and this Costco is only about a mile from my office I think it will work out just fine.

A few things I have found that I love from Costco :

Kirkland Toilet Paper~ 30 rolls for $14.99, this will last a while and it is a great quality of paper.

Rotisserie Chicken~Yummy! $4.99 about the same price you pay for a whole chicken for in the store and you would  still have to bake it.

The Bakery Cheesecake~ Huge and delicious for $12.99 I really don’t think you can bake one homemade this size for this price.

Milk~ I am a milk snob! I confess. We drink a ton of milk around here and their prices and quality just can’t be beat and the jug is square and tall, takes up less room in the fridge.

Kirkland Garbage Bags~ 200 kitchen size bags for $14.99! I had to laugh when I realized this box of garbage bags will last me close to 2 years!

Sister Schubert’s Frozen Rolls~ I forget the price but 30 yeast rolls heat and eat in a few minutes and taste like homemade! I love homemade rolls and these are as close as you can get without the work and not much more than a bag of rolls in the grocery store. You heat the number of rolls you want and keep the rest in the freezer for the next time, no waste.

Some of the food items are a larger size than we would eat before the expiration date but would be great for holidays or parties. The  household items such at the toilet paper and garbage bags, to me are a great buy and awesome quality, buy once and have on hand for a while.

Some things I have learned  from reading around the internet:

If you work for a large company that has a discount buying program be sure an check there before you purchase a membership. The company I work  for had a special coupon deal where I will receive coupons in the mail once I join for some free items, such as a FREE Rotisserie Chicken, a FREE  pack of 48 AA batteries, and a case of Spring Water and coupons for more discounts! I didn’t see this until a day or so after I joined, so I took the paperwork to Costco the next time I was in the store and they applied the awareness code ….they are nice like that.

Hang onto your receipts: If the item goes on sale or marked down within thirty days from your purchase, take in your receipt and they will refund you the difference.

If the price has an asterisk  * this in a one time stock item, once they are gone they won’t be back in stock so if you want one you better get it while they have them.

You can read more here.

What are some of your favorite items to buy at Costco?

Pinit

I made these last Christmas and they were delicious. We gobbled them all up before I could even share them on here. Soooo….last night I made them again and hanged on to a few so I could snap some photos! This is a Pinterest find that’s a keeper.

So Simple and So Decadent! This recipe will be the star of your holiday baking!

Red Velvet White Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of Red Velvet Cake Mix
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 sticks of butter softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips

Instructions:

  • *This is easier to mix using an electric mixer.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Beat the softened butter until fluffy. Add the cake mix and flour and mix well. Add the egg mix again until well mixed. Pour in the chips and mix until well distributed.
  • Drop by large spoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. (I used a 1 tablespoon cookie dough/ice cream scoop) Press lightly with a large spoon or glass bottom to spread/flatten the dough a bit.(If you don't do this step they will be more of a rounded shape than flat like a cookie.
  • Bake 10-13 minutes until done. Don't overbake.
  • Cool on wire rack.
  • Makes 24-26 large cookies.

Christmas Door Ornament

by Shelley on November 29, 2012 · 0 comments

in Crafts, Holiday Gifts, Holidays

Pinit

Quite a few years ago a friend of mine had a Christmas ornament she has custom made and I loved it. So I set out and made one for myself. Super simple.

You will need:

  • Sharpie Pen
  • Thin piece of plywood or craftwood
  • Paint
  • Thin ribbon
  • small piece of artificial pine
  • hot glue and hot glue gun
  • small bead
  • ribbon for hanging

You will need a thin piece of plywood or wood from a craft store. Purchase and cut to the desired size. I measured and drew out my desired size and cut if with a jig saw. Mine is cut 3×5 inches, but you can make it larger or smaller depending on your tree size.

Paint front and back and edges white and allow to dry. You may need to cover with 2 coats.

Using a Sharpie pen and a ruler draw in the design to make it look like a door and then your surname in the bottom half.

Glue a loop of ribbon on back.

Cut a small piece of a stem from an artificial wreath or tree and trim the excess needles. Form into a circle.

Hot glue a 3-4 inch piece of thin red ribbon and tie into a bow. Hot glue the wreath onto the top portion of the door.

Glue on a glass or gold bead on for the doorknob. This is an easy ornament and would make a great handmade gift for your friends, neighbors and relatives.

Enjoy,
